BLACK + BROWN PROTECTION
FULL MOON SPELL/RITUAL
4 flowers, bits of plant, or a handful of Earth from your immediate neighborhood or (if you have it) a place that you’d like to send protection to.
Photos of friends, family, those who we want to send healing and protection to: This could be a photo of anyone or anything in the world. Is there a body of water that you want to heal? Is there someone in Ferguson, Minneapolis, or Saint Louis that you’d like to send love and protection to? Have you been wanting to send protection to those who seek refuge in other countries? Gather a photo or visual representation of this element for yourself.
Banishing plants/elements: Gather any of these plants you have access to. Dried or essential oils of any of these plants is fine to use for the ritual.**
1 White Candle: If possible, a 7 day candle with glass candle.
1 Metal, Glass, or Ceramic Bowl: The candle will go into this bowl so be sure it’s large enough to place your candle in!
A little water
** There are so many other protection plants and elements to work with! Use whatever feels right and true for you and your ancestry!
Prepare your space. However you do this/ however feels right to you. I typically smudge myself and my space, as well as take a bath or shower -- with the intention of washing/smudging myself of the stresses of the day. Anyway you can prepare your body and space for being a conduit of spirit and energy, do that.
On a table/ floor/ or wherever you have space. Create a space to place your candle, photos and ritual items.
In the bowl, pour your water. When doing this, I usually say a thank you to the water and my own prayers to Yemaya, Olokun, and Yewajobi.
Place the candle in the bowl of water. To me, this represents adding extra protection to the intention you set into the candle.
With a handful of those banishing plants, create a sacred circle around your water and candle. This will also add additional protection to your spell but also adds to your intention of protection of black and brown bodies and spirit in the world.
When doing something like this, I usually say thank you to the Earth and the plants for being a constant reminder that I’m at home, wherever I am on this planet.
With the plants/Earth you gathered from your neighborhood/special location, place them in the water that surrounds your candle.
Place one bit of the plant/Earth you gathered in the North side of the water bowl, the South side of the water bowl, the East side of the water bowl, and the West side of the water bowl.
(While doing this: uplift your community, give gratitude for the community you reside within, sing/dance/or speak intentions of protection and joy to black and brown people in your community. Since you are also part of the community this would be a great time to send out protective prayers for yourself as well -- especially if you are a person of color.)
When doing this, I will likely say something to the effect of: With this Earth and elements from my community, I send protection and healing to all black and brown people in need.
After setting this mantle for protection, I’d encourage you to say the following:
We send gratitude and love to the four sacred elements: the Earth that sustains us, the Water that nourishes us, the Air that propels us, and the Fire that warms us
For the Earth is sacred and makes our existence possible.
We send gratitude and love to our past, present, and future selves
We send gratitude and love to our ancestors, plant beings, and kinfolk around the world
We send gratitude and love to those who have tended to and prayed on the land we now inhabit
For this spiritual knowledge echoes through the Earth
We call upon (INSERT YOUR OWN GOD(S), GODDESSES, PLANTS, VISIONS, etc.) to aid
us in sending protection and light to every black and brown person in this realm
May all black and brown people of this world be protected from harm -- both physical and spiritual
May all of our black and brown ancestors be healed and honored by the work we do in this lifetime
May all black and brown people thrive
May all black and brown people be able to express their right to light
May all black and brown people be given space to heal
May all black and brown people find freedom
