Astrology brings up an interesting debate about destiny vs free will. Are our lives and the experiences that we will have predetermined or do we create our realities? What is your perspective on this?
ah. i think there is no rush. your soul expands infinitely across time and space, and there will be experiences it gathers that need to resolved or reconciled and those will be sorted out in their own time. perhaps this lifetime, perhaps not. sometimes i get myself in a rush trying to resolve all my karmic debts so i can experience liberation, but that is really no fun. the way i see it, yes there are going to be things, perhaps from past lives that i will be invited to resolve. at that moment i will either accept the invitation or i will not. regardless, i still get to choose how i move through every single moment of my life. that feels like free will to me. i also believe that your internal reality creates your external reality, which also seems somewhere between predetermination and free will. if your conditioned response to, for example, the sound of someone yelling, is to curl up into a ball, is that free will? is it predetermined? does it matter? the key is, if you want to be free in any aspect of your life you must unravel yourself so you can see where you need extra nourishment and support. after each unraveling you will become more and more free and less stuck in habits dictated by your pasts. and that is, to me, the major driving force of astrology, to allow you to come into such deep awareness of yourself and the universe that you can choose at any given moment which energies of the universe you call upon versus being at their whims.
I’m always interested in people’s processes. When you write the weekly horoscopes, how do you put the message together? Are there any rituals you do to prepare you synthesizing the information and writing it out?
i am currently working with saturn to create more structure around this! my weekly horoscopes are themselves a ritual. and it is a pretty lengthy one, it is like a ritual birth (every week!). i have a daily practice of meditation, chanting, and singing that is crucial to my process, as well as being really physically active. i always write with crystals nearby and burn a candle to whatever deity or trait i am really drawing from that week. and while this may be less glamorous a lot of the work is just sitting and getting it done!
usually in the last mile to keep myself going i watch a ton of music videos on youtube! top three are grown woman (beyonce), formation (beyonce), and side by side (ariana grande). idk, but i am so grateful to popstars because they have definitely come through for me in the process of birthing my 'scopes.
Speaking of rituals, do you have a favorite ritual that you return to often?
i love spending time at my altar, i am not sure how i lived so much of my life without it. i also love taking baths and moisturizing.
How did you find your way to astrology?
at first it was curiosity, but over time it became a way to confirm what i was feeling about what was going on in my life. taking ten minutes to read my daily horoscopes was a ritual that, looking back on, was definitely a key part of maintaining some mental, emotional, and spiritual stability. even today when something feels off, i have astrology as a frame to understand what is going on, which is deeply comforting when things feel swirly and random. over time my relationship with astrology deepened, not necessarily of my own volition, the whole process has kind of been like sinking into honey. you do not realize how deep in you are, but it is sticky and sweet so it is all good. i started writing my horoscopes in the spring of 2017, though i see them as a kind of scripture that allows people to find some faith within the uncertainty and some empowerment in who they are and how they move through the world.
How do you think people can use astrology as a tool for healing and self-empowerment?
you can pause to look at the stars and talk to the moon, you can send gratitude to any and every planet that has shown you special attention, you can pray with the universe...astrology is a gateway to the divine, a path to get people to begin really unearthing the magic within themselves. astrology is simply having an understanding that you are a part of the universe, one with the universe, and hold universes within you. simply working with this thought, truly contemplating it, is profound. any art form that centers your feelings and nourishment is going to be healing and empowering. any art form that at its root holds that all beings must be sacred for they are made of the universe, is going to be healing and empowering.
What gifts have you received from astrology?
working with people has been more of a blessing than i imagined. whether is because of the horoscopes or in a chart reading, i get to hold this deep, loving space for folks and it is such an honor. i feel like a priestess, bringing people to the altar of the divine, if even for a moment, in the hopes they will be healed and transformed by the grace of the universe. it is such a filling way to do my work in this world.
more practically, and why i think folks should get their natal charts read, working with my natal chart has really helped me hone in on the parts of myself i need to work on and sort out. it helped me acknowledge my anxiety, which is something i have been struggling with for a very long time. once i was able to see it in my chart, it stopped being a whisper in the back of my head, it was something i could actually see, and if i could see it i could begin getting support to work with it. my chart also holds me accountable, because i can see the multiple vibrations of myself, so i get to ask, "am i vibrating in the ways my chart is calling me to?" and whatever answer i give can direct me toward further work and support i need to settle into my divine selves.
A more technical question, whats the difference between the sun, ascendant, and moon signs in terms of how they influence a person? I notice that there’s a lot of confusion over those aspects in particular.
oh, sun is your will and identity. it is the ‘who you are at your (visible) core’ in the chart. to me it is the inverse of pluto, which relates to the core of you outside of identity, condition, or life circumstance. the sun is how you are vibrating in this lifetime and is very wrapped up in life condition etc.
the rising (ascendent) literally relates to what was rising upon the eastern horizon when you took your first breath. every breath you are breathing in the energy of the stars, but the first breath you take is significant. the energy of this first breath surrounds you your entire life. this is why people consider the ascendent to be ‘how people see you.’ they are actually responding to that kind of vibrational cloak you wear with you through life that they ‘see.’ (quantum physics, yay!)
the moon in the inner self, the emotional self. my favorite way of thinking of the moon is ‘who you are when you need your mother.’ it is that vulnerable part that is a huge driver of why you make the decisions you do. if you want to bring more of the divine into your life learn to listen to your feelings and trust your moon!
What words of wisdom do you have for those interested in becoming astrologists or starting their own businesses?
if you are ready to leap, then leap! laugh when the universe rises up to catch you, dear one. and listen, do not get so stubborn you fall out of alignment with yourself, if the universe keeps sending you messages to shift and change, guess what? do not get too caught up with branding, leave enough room for reinvention and do not let any one feel entitled to your labor!
What’s next for you?! What are you dreaming about and conjuring?
whoa, i guess now is a good time to let folks know i am in the middle of yoga teacher training! so body work is coming soon, some way, some how, although i have no clue how it is going to look. also i keep day dreaming that someone is going to offer to translate my horoscopes into spanish! and maybe youtube one day? who knows, i am so in this process i can't always future vision.
