I can't even remember how I found you! I do remember being absolutely stunned by your candle work when I saw some pictures. How did you get into candle making?
To be honest, I believe I found you! I was amazed and glad that I was able to stumble upon your community. Thank you for allowing me to be apart of it as well!
I was born into candle making as I am a descendent hoodoo candle maker. My father who has always been extremely active with hoodoo candle making did a tremendous amount of "work" for others. As a single father, my Grandmother was obviously very much so involved in my life and also had a strong hand in the influence of creating magical candles. I had no idea how fortunate and lucky I am to be blessed with this gift. I am who I am because of them.
You have several candles in your collection. What is your personal favorite and why?
Yes, my collection is continuously growing and I absolutely love all of them! I have over 20 candles that I have yet to release and this question is always so difficult for me to answer. Each candle has so much meaning to me and holds a special place in my heart. If I HAVE to choose one....
The Papa Legba- Eleggua Candles are my favorite as I see life to be an ongoing journey. On Monday, I handmade this candle originally as a statue for my altar. I asked him, "are you telling me to make you into a candle instead?" I did a quick search online and only saw glass vigil candles dedicated to him. I knew then, I would need to make this candle available to our community in dedication to him as our gatekeeper to all doors and of all roads.
For you, What makes candles so special as a tool for magic/conjuring?
Besides the deeper meaning from my background and family history... This is a special tool for magic as this is magic as its finest. By utilizing candles they will help you master your own craft. Learning to dress the candles with the proper oils and herbs, arranging them on your alter where you see fit and even picking the proper color for a specific reason will be a process for growth for any person. Candles set the tone for who the candle belongs to. Fate dictates its purpose of burning and energies radiate at a higher vibration instantaneously. It is powerful, it is sacred, and it should be handled with true intentions.
How do you get inspiration for the different candles you make?
My family will always be my inspiration. I have a responsibility to supply our world with candles to assist your craft with keeping our ancestral religions, traditions, and magic alive especially in the black community. Current events in this world are inspiring me to make more empowering candles and a collection of Loas/Orishas Candles as well.
It's so interesting to me the different processes people have when they are doing their crafts. Do you have a particular process for candle making, like do you start with a ritual or call on any Spirit Guides before you make a candle?
Absolutely, It is a must for me to do so. I live along the coast, so I am surrounded by Yemaya! Before I start my day, I walk to the sand offering Yemaya my thanks and receive some ocean therapy during my meditation walk.
I also hand wash with a mixture of herbs & rainwater before starting any rituals. I light my altar incense to create a harmonious atmosphere because candle making can be strenuous to the mind, body, and spirit if I am doing so for multiple hours at a time. Personal purity is very important, especially when making candles. I sprinkle salt at the front door and cleanse my alter. I say my prayers, light my candles and get down to business!
Besides candles, do you have any other go to tools or mediums for magic?
I connect with various divinatory tools such as working with shells, pendulums to playing cards. I have always been a magnetic field to feeling people's energies. We are truly magical beings. I love receiving and giving energy healing for emotional, physical and spiritual healing.
What is a favorite ritual of yours?
Every 3 months, I burn The 7 Knob Wish Candle for specific wishes. This ritual is a 7-day ritual where you write your 1wish or 7 different wishes on each knob. You would burn 1 knob per day for 7 days.
Who are some Black Femme Witches that inspire you?
First and foremost my loves... My Grandmother, her mother, and her mother's mother- without them I would not be here today (all the woman in my family tree)
Princess Nokia- I appreciate her creativity & her Bruja inspired music.
Descendant hoodoo woman by the name of A'ja is an artist born under the Pisces Sun. This beautiful soul who crafts spiritual candles is Better known as the Hoodoo Goddess...
From birth, she was raised along the northwest of the Pacific Ocean by her mystic father. He who is heavily embedded with Louisiana roots practiced Hoodoo & Voodoo with a huge influence of sacred teachings from Native American traditions. By nature, her grandmother actively invited magic into their daily life with the guidance of her ancestral spirits to nurture and develop the young Goddess.
As a child, she can vividly recall peeking along the side of the kitchen wall or tip-toeing over the kitchen counter to see what magic her father was conjuring up during the witches hour. The curiosity only grew within herself as it was in her bloodline and her passion bloomed. At the tender age of 8, A'ja melted a variety of colorful pieces of wax on a white pillar candle. She was able to create her first hoodoo candle alongside her encouraging father.
From there the family traditions were passed down in the art of magic, healing, and herbs. A'ja has grown spiritually through the years and has mastered the art of making hoodoo candles, mixing potions and is able to utilize a variety of divinatory tools. She incorporates shell readings and playing cards when called upon. Energy healing radiates from her hands for those in need of emotional, physical and/or spiritual healing...
With a childhood filled with wonderful memories of true magic, rituals, blessings and divination readings A'ja is able to share her knowledge and vision with the world while nurturing her own little goddess.
